It's interesting since I believe it's these staffing levels that are starting to dictate technology decisions at schools.  I think going one to one with  Chromebook vs going one to one with windows laptop is less about cost per device and more about the type of overhead management that comes with adding/managing/updating/protecting all those pesky windows machines.

I completely agree. I am curious if other Tech Directors know of any grant funded positions or state funding that can aid to bring the tech staff to device ratio more inline with industry standards. I strongly believe that bringing additional skilled staff into our tech departments will have a much bigger impact than any additional hardware.

Just like in a restaurant there is an optimal waiter to table ratio. In the IT field similar ratios apply no matter what the industry.

Considering nothing is more expensive than full time staff, I wonder if other RISTE members would be interested in getting into some outsourced technician help from all these local technology players in the game and split it up a bit.  I think if we all had had a full time technician we'd use them for 40 hours, but I probably could "survive" with a 1/2 time person, but few IT professionals want part time jobs and the cost of bringing someone in part time can cost prohibitive.

Maybe if I needed someone 1/2 time and another school needed someone 1/2 time, we could split an outsourced person.
