YouTube Safe Search is a bit too safe

We are forcing you tube safe search in our google apps environment for students, and are allowing teachers to bypass it.  The problem is that teachers are sharing their own youtube videos with students and some of those videos are blocked in youtube as unsafe.  The blocking is random, and occurs on wireless and wired computers.  A user can be blocked one minute, and then the video will work after several retries.  Online searching shows others with similar issues; safe search blocking harmless videos randomly.

The fix seems to be turning off safe search, though because we allow students to take home their chromebooks, that could cause some issues.

Has anyone been able to find a good alternative to opening up safe search?

    thanks  -Marc

I know this not a solution for all that is wrong with safe search but we have learned to live with it since we must comply with CIPA.  When a teacher lets me know that a link is blocked I fire up VLC and can almost always transcode the video from youtube to mp4 format and copy it to the teachers network folder.  Im only reponsible for 44 classrooms so that has proven acceptable so far.  they seem to be pleased that they don.t have to rely on the Internet working well in order to fulfill their learning plan for the day.
