Securly web filtering 2.0 for Schools at

The Highlander Institute is excited to partner with RISTE to bring Securly, a new and innovative web filter all the way from sunny California to snowy Providence. Highlander Institute learned about Securly last fall and got excited about its ability to empower teachers to take control of their own classroom web filter, and it integrates with Google Apps for Education. Highlander Institute has been piloting the product at the Highlander Charter school since early December.

As an increasing number of schools around RI start to adopt 1:1 and BYOD programs, classroom management is becoming a legitimate challenge for teachers.  Devices like Chromebooks and iPads can play a vital role in empowering students, but only if they are used in constructive and meaningful ways.  Social media and educational games are fundamental requirements for the 21st century classroom, yet teachers often find themselves frustrated by web-filters that block valuable educational content.

Despite our efforts as technology leaders, we still find our current filters will block sites that teachers and students need access to.   Most of us use the same process to unblock website: submit a  technology request, wait for approval, then unblock the site.  This takes time, and leads to a loss of productivity in class.

A new product that has hit the market, Securly, enables educators to have a classroom level view that was previously available only to the Director of Technology or the member of their technology department.

With Securly, teachers can see in real time which websites students in the classroom are visiting, with the ability to blacklist, whitelist, or lockdown these sites at their discretion. Securly redefines classroom management for teachers by allowing them to: (1) block sites that are classroom distractions, (2) permit sites that empower their students, and (3) lockdown to a specific website to get students focused on the task at hand e.g. for an online test.

Come see how this product is working for the Highlander Charter School and how it could impact yours.
